The County of San Diego is located in California and borders the Pacific Ocean. The county borders Mexico and in 2000, had a population of 2,813,833. The county is the third largest county by population in the state and is the sixth largest county in the country. The county seat of San Diego County is the City of San Diego.

The County of San Diego was settled by Spanish settlers in 1769 at the Mission San Diego de Alcala. San Diego was one of the first counties in California and was established in 1850 at the time of statehood. The site was named San Diego Bay and had been rechristened in 1602. Parts of the county were later removed to form Riverside County and Imperial County.

San Diego County is varied in its geography. On the western side of the county, are 70 miles of coastline. In the Northeast, are snow-capped mountains and in the East, the Sonoran Desert. In the northeast portion of the county, you find the Cleveland National Forest.
